When I was a kid, my brothers and sister and I would play Monopoly.  Do you remember that board game?  Well, you might remember that the object of the game was, is, to build so much wealth that you would bankrupt the other players so that you would have everything and the other guys would have nothing.  While we all wanted to win, I don’t think any of us took the objective of the game very seriously.

As a father myself, I know something of the persistent asking for stuff by my own sons.  “Persistent asking” puts it mildly in some cases – at some times it became nagging and almost harassment.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my kids, and my wife and I did the best for them that we could.  But I especially recall a number of times when we’d just left Sunday Mass and the kids were in the back seat, and almost as soon as the car began to move, the kids would start a chant: Sesame Doughnuts, Sesame Doughnuts!

Fr. Tony Galati

It is striking in our gospel reading that when Jesus sends out the 72, he tells them that their message is to be the same, whether people welcome them or not: he tells them to say, “The Kingdom of God is very near to you”.  Now, that message remains good news regardless of how it may be received.  And it also remains true that God and the life he offers us IS near to us, despite people’s response, and it does not become bad news just because it is not welcomed.
