Who We Are
Our History:
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) was established in 1833 France by a young college student, Frederic Ozanam. Challenged by a fellow student to put his Catholic faith into action, Ozanam created the Society and named it after Vincent de Paul, a saint renowned for his work with the poor.
SVDP in the United States began in 1845, in St. Louis, Missouri, and has since spread to every state in the country. The National Council of SVDP was established in 1869, founded in a spirit of justice and charity; not only helping individuals and families living in poverty, but seeking to eliminate causes of poverty at their roots.
Our Structure:
A “conference” is the basic and essential grouping in St. Vincent de Paul society. Members of a conference, known as Vincentians, are organized locally, often affiliated with a local parish They are the strength and heart of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Each conference works to provide concrete aid and comfort to their neighbors in need. Help is not limited to material needs but includes all activities that strengthen and nurture the human spirit. Conference services are provided without monetary compensation to the members.

St. Charles Conference has been working in our NE Portland service area since 1937! We provide access to food in our shopping style Pantry. Besides charitable acts, the St. Charles Conference meets to support one another and foster a spirit of friendship, unity, and spirituality so we may better serve those in need.
