G I F T
Called to Make Change - March  8, 2020

We explored how we are called to respond to, or resist, or advocate, or engage in change that has social consequence. Examples include climate change, local housing issues, immigration concerns, and others.
Here's what we did!
  1. Sing. We sang the GIFT song. Listen to it here.
  2. Pray. We prayed the GIFT prayer. See it here.
  3. "Change" cards. Each person picked a "change quote" from the cards on the table. Shared the quotes with each other, and traded until they got the card they wanted. Download the quote cards here.
  4. Danger of Silence - video TED talk. School teach Clint Smith speaks about speaking your truth for the sake of change and for the sake of others. View video to the left.
  5. GIFT Journals. Paul and Judy Bachman gave each of us a homemade journal that we use to reflect on the changes to which we are called. The cover pages are provocative and the journal includes a blue page with ten tips for navigating change. We journaled about the TED talk video: when was time when you failed to speak your truth? a time when you spoke your truth? someone you admire because they speak their truth?
  6. Eat. We had a terrific lunch of ham and potato quiche along with muffins.
  7. Issue Cards and Bible Cards. Each participant picked an issue card and a Bible card. We created groups according to categories of issues. Each person shared why they chose that issue and how the Bible card inspires them. See list of issues and Bible cards.
  8. Steps to Make Change. Candice Hiatt shared four simple steps for making social change, and in the process shared about her experience in El Salvador. See video to the left.
  9. Advice. We concluded with each table writing advice to Candice and the Social Justice Committee about what issues they should pursue. (See pink sheet images here.)
  10. End by praying. We ended by praying the Lord's Prayer.
