Food and Faith Buying Club Fact Sheet
Ecumenical
Ministries of Oregon’s Congregational Wellness Project
- What: A buying club is defined as an “informal
group organized to buy directly from a wholesaler and save substantially on
groceries…Group members order in bulk and divide the order among themselves.”
- We will be starting our buying club with produce
(vegetables, herbs, and some fruit), and if there is interest, we may increase
it to include eggs, dairy, and bulk goods. We will be working with Deep Roots
Farm from Albany, OR. (Congregations – though not individuals at this time –
will also be able to purchase coffee in bulk from Portland Roasting Company,
which offers organic, fair-trade coffee whenever possible – but always high
quality beans that are roasted locally.)
- When: Order pick up will be on Wednesday
evenings, from 4-7 p.m. starting on June 9th.
- Where: Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 N Rosa
Parks Way (N Rosa Parks and N Vancouver)
- Why: Purchasing through the collective buying
power of a buying club gives members access to wholesale prices, as well as
high-quality, fresh produce. Buying produce from a nearby farm promotes local
agriculture, eating in-season, and heath.
- Schedule: Deep Roots will release their price
list by Friday morning each week, which will then be posted at your
congregation, on the buying club Google Group, and emailed to all buying club
members who have computer access. Orders will need to be placed by Sunday
night through the Google Group, by email, or by calling Alison or Kate at the
EMO office.
- The buying club will be open to members of the Wellness
Project Coalition Congregations, including the Muslim Community Center of
Portland, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, St. Charles Catholic Church,
Ainsworth United Church of Christ, and Maranatha, for use at congregational
events and fellowship hour, individuals and families. If all goes well, we
may be able to add members from other congregations or organizations.
